If you’re reading this then you like to read. How’s that for wisdom.

I love to read even though I love TV and movies. I especially enjoy finding relatively unknown authors who write for the pure joy of sharing the stories that have been locked inside them screaming to be set free.  My primary love is fiction. I get enough reality everyday and I choose to escape.

I sincerely hope that YOU will also share your favorite authors and sources by using the comments section.  I would especially like to hear about the authors you enjoy who haven’t made it to the best seller lists.

The advent of the e-book has made publishing easier than at any point in history. They gives us exposure to many talented and creative authors and of course mind numbingly poor drivel like this blog. Some of these free or low-cost books also have some editing errors. These little glitches don’t really take away from my enjoyment of the books, but I’ve read reviews where readers disparage the authors for poor editing. With every great advance in history there comes a cost.  Deal with it.

Smashwords is a stunning repository of e-literature. It is low-cost or free and covers a wide range of topics.

Randolph Lalonde is a young author I’m hooked on. He represents everything that’s great in the old style of science fiction storytelling updated for today’s reader.  The initial trilogy is free. The subsequent books are very low-priced.

“Brad Ashton fled three years ago to avoid a conviction for murder. Now he’s back. And his hope for freedom appears to be within reach. Unfortunately there are those who have no interest in his legal status; they only want him dead or on the run once more… ”

Maybe I do like fantasy and supernatural stories after all. This is not a book series I normally would have chosen. But I tried it and was impressed with the depth of the character development. Be aware that this series is very violent, graphic, and bloody. This is the first book in the series.

Dalglish- The Weight of Blood

Books-The Machine Stops

Click the cover to read online

“The Machine Stops” is a science fiction short story (12,300 words) by E. M. Forster. After initial publication in The Oxford and Cambridge Review (November 1909), the story was republished in Forster’s The Eternal Moment and Other Stories in 1928. After being voted one of the best novellas up to 1965, it was included that same year in the populist anthology Modern Short Stories.[1] In 1973 it was also included in The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume Two. (From Wikipedia)

This short story is included among my favorites for predicting so much of today’s society with uncanny insight. It is available at iBooks and a variety of sources. You can also read it online at: The Machine Stops    or  Download from Feedbooks here.

The Gods of Asphalt

The Gods of Asphalt by fellow blogger H.E. Ellis is a compelling read from the first chapter and has a cast of incredibly well drawn characters.  Take a moment and click the graphic above and just read the first chapter at Amazon or on her blog. That’s all you’ll have to do and you’ll be hooked like I was. These are characters you will identify with no matter your age or gender, whether  from a parent’s or child’s view.

Oh, thanks for the info. I’m a big freebie lover … and I do love to read:
Kundera, Miller, Vonnegut, Carver, Bukowski … just noticed they’re all dudes. Add Ayn Rand–she’s got some balls.

    Hi Alan-
HA! I bet I know who recommended “The Machine Stops” to you! :-)
It’s one of my favorites as well, and I frequently recommend it to others. How could he have known all those years ago where we (our society) would be headed 100 years later…
